The Barbera Harvest: A Celebration of
Agliano Terme's Bountiful Season 🍇✨
Every fall, Agliano Terme transforms into a bustling hub of activity as the Barbera grape harvest begins. This is not just a simple agricultural task; it's a celebration that brings together everyone who has dedicated their year to nurturing these precious vines. From the dormant winter months to the lively harvest season, there is much work to do to bring this delicious wine from vine to glass.
Winter Pruning 🌱 During the cold winter months when the Barbera vines are dormant, they are carefully cut back to control growth & shape for the coming year.
Spring Training 🌼 Temperatures rise, the vines awaken, and tiny buds begin to appear asking for love. The fast growing shoots are meticulously tied & trained to create optimal space & light.
Summer Canopy Management ☀️ Throughout the summer the vines flourish with clusters of small grapes. Farmers diligently manage the canopy, removing excess leaves to ensure ample sunlight and air circulation. This is also the time when organic pest control methods are put in place to prevent disease.
Fall Harvest 🍂 Based on the unpredictable weather here, timing is critical. The sugar levels are measured, and readiness is assessed. There is a small window for picking... some are picked by hand, some by machine, both ensuring only the finest grapes make their way to the winery to begin the transformation into the beloved Barbera wine.
A Special Thank You to the Origlia Family:
Our First Time Working in the Vines 🍇✨
This year, we had the privilege of experiencing the Barbera harvest firsthand, thanks to the hospitality of our Agliano friends the Origlias. Their historically significant property is set atop the Salere area amidst Barbera vines. Its new vineyard Brumaia yielded its second year of grapes, with many more harvests to come. Stefano, Antonella, Francesco & Pietro welcomed us for our first-ever grape-picking adventure. The joy of being part of this time-honored tradition was truly unforgettable, from cutting the clusters to enjoying fresh local goat cheese, honey & fabulous wine. Thank you, Origlia family, for your always appreciated hospitality and for sharing this incredible experience with us!

How awesome that must have been. What a wonderful new life and traditions you are building.
